Mark King

Co-Founder & Director of Technical Advisory & Consulting

Mark is an internationally respected sustainability practitioner with a foundation in natural and biological sciences, a deep understanding of ESG policy and global standards, a profound knowledge of our clients’ industries, geographic specifics, and sector nuances, and unparalleled ‘on the ground’ development project experience across the full range of economic sectors and in scores of countries for both the public and private sectors.

He has 40+ years’ experience assessing and managing the environmental, health and social risks, impacts and opportunities associated with financing development projects and policy-based interventions, including equity investments (including OTC), fungible/non-fungible debt, bonds, guarantees, insurance and leasing products. These projects have ranged from lending/investing in micro, small and medium enterprises to mega-projects in the extractives, transport, and energy sectors (including renewables). Previous clients have included MFIs (such as World Bank Group, EBRD, EIB, IADB, AfDB), multiple EDFIs, governments and private sector banks, funds, companies, and consortia.

With a gift, and successful track record, for teaching, coaching, and mentoring senior leaders, executives, and colleagues; Mark has made significant contributions to building competencies in environmental, health, safety, and social management in a wide variety of companies, public and private sector financial institutions and government agencies.

He has drawn upon his substantial project-based expertise and experience to advise financial institutions on strategy at the C-suite, including developing corporate, sectoral, and national policies and strategies, and Environmental and Social Management Systems (ESMS). He has led teams in the revision and development of bespoke Environmental and Social policies, standards, procedures, and toolkits, and has delivered training for over 250 financial institutions.

He has had numerous leadership roles on large, complex, controversial and/or high-risk projects and has provided invaluable advice and guidance on a diverse range of issues, including the protection of endangered species and critical habitat, labour and rights-based issues, large scale resettlement programmes and livelihood restoration, gender inclusion and discrimination, and vulnerable or marginalised groups including indigenous peoples.

His career has also included previous leadership roles within international consulting firms and MFIs, including Chairman and CEO at Earth Active; Senior Advisor on Environmental and Social Global Practices and Chief Officer for Environmental & Social Standards at the World Bank; Director of Policy and Project Oversight at EBRD; and Senior Adviser at ERM.
